Aquarius link Looney Lab link 4 1 Card
Aquarius is most similar to Dominos played with cards. The object of this game is to connect the same image texture on seven separate cards by placing the cards adjacent to each other. The game ends when seven textures are connected, and a player in the game has that texture as their goal. This all seems simple enough, but add into the mix that some cards have four textures while others only have one, and at any time players can switch goals, or remove cards. This game of guessing and stratigic placement is appropriate for all ages, especially the very young since there are few words in the game. If you are a fan of Dominos you have to play this game, or risk missing out.

Aquire link Avalon Hill link 4 2 Board
Monopolies are your friend, and you are are trying to collect the most adjacent lots to create the biggest hotel chain(high tech businesses in the new edition). Players take turns choosing a tile to place on the board and build area the business expands. Once businesses touch they merge with the largest company absorbing the smaller one. Once a company reaches a certain size it can no longer merge. This game teaches players about business strategy, and stock market investing. I would recommend this for all ages after a game of Monopoly.

Are you A Werewolf link Looney Lab link 5 1 Role Playing
Remember Heads up Seven Up? Well like Heads Up Seven Up, Are You A Werewolf involves a group of people who each serve as a member of a colonial village that is being attacked by werewolves. Like any village the settlers are not happy and form a lynch mob to kill the suspected werewolves. The village seer is the only one that can know the truth, but must be careful to not attact the attention of the werewolves for fear of being eaten. This game is played in a circle with one caller who oversees the game keeping track of werewolves, the seer, and the dead. I recommend this for middle school and above. It makes a great party game, but also a demonstration of inquisitions like Salem Witch Trials.

Beans Beans the magical fruit the more you eat the more you... need to grow more and trade. In Bohanza you are a bean farmer. and plant beans in your two (possibly three) gardens. You must plant in the order you receive or the beans expire. Farmers can have only one kind of bean per garden, and more more beans you grow the more money you can earn. The trick is to trade you unwanted beans for the ones in your hand and in your gardens to get the most money. This game is a great game for social skills and a demonstration of bartering.

Chrononauts link Looney Lab link 4 2 Card
Play as a time traveler who is stuck in our time line, in order to return home they must alter significant historical events thus change our future. But they have to be careful because if they open up 13 paradoxes the universe with collapse and we all cease to exist. Another way to play is the get rich quick scheme where you can collect artifacts and have enough money to enjoy life in your new timeline. This game comes in two versions currently Early American, and Post Civil War to present, which can be combined to one large game. I recommend this game for 4th grade readers and above.

A murder has been committed, and now you and the other visitors must discover who among you is the murder. This game is an interactive logic problem. After you finish this game I recommend playing Kill Dr. Lucky. (Pair with The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin for a literary connection)

Playing gives participants an understanding of basic geography, road placement, and value of natural resources. This game great for older children, teens and adults.

Fluxx link Looney Lab link 5 1 Card
Ok no secret I love most of the games made by Looney Labs, since they tend to be very original. Fluxx is no exception. In this game players use rules, action cards, and keepers to reach the ever changing goals. The innovative part of this game is all of the elements come from the cards in players hands. Each turn you play one of these elements to make for fast paced super charged fun that will keep you on your toes.

Just another day as the government Executor. Its 1799, the end of the French Revolution, and business is booming or should we say rolling. This game lasts for three days. You goal is to collect the most popular heads and avoid the heroes and martyrs that get mixed in. This game helped me understand the French Revolution, and I believe it would be a great discussion starter for a history class.

Kill Dr. Lucky Cheapass Games link 4 2 Board
The obsessive compulsive Dr. Lucky, is having a weekend retreat for all his friends. He has been blackmailing you for years and now is your chance to knock him off once and for all. As he moves systematically through the rooms of his house find a weapon and moment alone for your chance. The only problem is that all the other players are in the same situation, and they too will be looking for their hidden moments with this popular man. CheapAss Games is known for only including the very basics, since most gamers have the necessary pieces in other games. I recommend this for mature children and teens, as well as adults.

Killer Bunnies link Playroom Entertainment link 4 2 Card
Bunnies: Cute Cuddly and greedy. The goal of this game is to win the Bunny lottery by having the magic carrot. While collecting carrots players put bunnies in play and try to knock off the other players bunnies so they don't have a winning bunny to keep the special carrot at the end of the game. The only downside is that when I normally play I forget about the carrots and have fun with the rest of the game. I recommend this game for an older audience.

Magic the Gathering link Wizards of the Coast link 3 2 TCG
Magic the Gathering is the most popular, and one of the first collectable card games. Developed in the nineties, this game used cards to represents elements of the game that players would battle with to win. The game is distributed in starter decks and booster packs to allow players to gain new cards and create strategies for defeating opponents. This can be considered a gateway game, because most gamers have played this game if not heard of it. Its popularity currently can be accounted to its success in competition tournaments where players duel with their best decks for large prizes. If you are unfamiliar with CCGs or TCGs you should visit the Magic the Gathering site and learn how this game works. Its basic design is integrated in to dozens of other CCGs.

Munchkin link Steve Jackson Games link 4 2 Card
Kick down the door, kill the monster, collect the treasure, Gain a level. This game is created by the same company who released Chez Geek. This is like a bad D&D dungeon campaign played with cards. When you kick down a door you will either get a special card or a monster. If your current level plus the bonuses of your items is equal to or greater to the level of the monster you win the battle and gain a level. At the bottom of monster cards there is a treasure reward you get from the treasure pile/deck. If the monsters level is too high your friends can help you out to share in the treasure. Combine with other Munchkin games and expansions for more fun. Game is over when a player begins their turn at level 10 or above.

Nanofictionary link Looney Lab link 4 1 Card
Come use characters, settings, problems and a resolution as printed on cards, to create an imaginative story and win the favor of all your friends. The game is divided into two phases. Phase one is writing the story where players form the story one card at a time. The more cards you use in your story the better your score, but also the sooner someone completes their story the more points they get. Phase two involves judges and players as now is the time to shine. Each player takes turns in order of the completion of their stories, to tell us how the elements on the cards come together into a coherent story. After everyone has had a chance to tell their story, the stories are judged and the person with he most points is the winner. This game works best with a group of your most fun, imaginative, and off the wall crazy friends. I recommend this for 3rd grade and above. Try using it as the source of a creative writing paper, or a family friendly evening.

Candyland, that board game from our childhoods where we learned about colors and moved through candyland eating sweets and making your way to the candy castle. Or so you thought. Actually is all a big ploy to gather candy at the castle to package for the world's children. Play as gingerbread-men that are on to the scheme and running for their lives. This game is dark, but fun for an older audience.

Science-Fusion link Edge Games LLC link 3 3 Card
Science Teachers rejoice. I first saw this game at a conference and was intrigued. The basis: You play as elements of the periodic table with a highly complex battle system. It is very similar to TCG battle systems, and also strategy war game rules. I don't normally enjoy this type of game, and the educational value is obvious to both teachers and students. Still this is the most interesting way I have seen to understand the periodic table. I don't get science, and the hardest things was always the memorization. I think this is ideal for having around schools and other educational collections. I don't know if this will be popular with students, but I don't think that should stop you from trying to integrate into curriculum and your game collection.

Tikal link Rio Grande link 4 2 Board
As archaeologists in the Central American Jungle you are exploring the undiscovered area where the Mayans once lived, looking for hidden temples. The game is played through a mix of tile placement and movement. Each turn you place a tile that is either a temple, jungle, artifact location, or a volcano. You have 18 expedition members and one leader who explore the area, uncover temples, and collect artifacts. Scoring is complete every time a volcano tile is turned up, and at the end of the game. This game would be a great starter for discussion on archeology, and lost cultures.

Warhammer link Games Workshop link 3 3 Miniature
Warhammer 40K is a game of miniatures. Players use small figures built to scale to represent their armies. Great detail is applied in creating the miniature, and in calculating the playing field which can be as small as a dinner table top or as large as an entire room. WarHammer is set in the year 40,000, where sides are battling over control of the Imperial planet. I recommend the Battle of Macragge Box Set for beginners interested in playing.

Xig The Four Element link GT2 Fun and Games 4 1 Board
A puzzle game where you play pieces to form a connected line from a fixed start and end point. This is one of many board games where the pieces are part of the board. The neat part of this game though is its expanding nature. The original set had two elements, and the expansion set expanded it to four. Now the developers have created a separate game, Sorcerer's Sword, that fits into the Xig game and can be played simultaneously.
