Writing

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

Earlier this week I received in the mail the state library journal. In it was my first article. (I wrote it in June). In my opinion it was horribly written and I should have had more people read it to make sure that it was coherent, but its a first article. I know I have plenty of room to grow. For a long time I thought that having my name printed in a journal would mean something. Possibly gain people’s respect, or even open more doors when it comes to jobs and other writing/presenting opportunities. I don’t think its about that though. In many way it is immortalizing my ideas, my experiences, and sharing them with not only current readers, but people in the future.

As time has moved so quickly this past year I see how much I’ve changed. A year ago I was a student, eager to learn and be molded. I had attended a few conferences, but was preparing to go to Gaming in Libraries in Chicago. Now I feel as if I’m on the other side. November 19th-25th I hosted National Games Week at the Second Life Library. (Audio was recorded and is available at http://feeds.feedburner.com/SecondLifeLibraryPodcasts).

Well ttyl. I’ll try not be be sporadic in publishing updates.

(right now my current project is writing reviews of tabletop games and movies, blogging for YALSA, Wiretap, Libgaming, and Second Life, preparing for ALA midwinter, creating instructional podcasts, and deciding what to I want to do with the rest of my life.)

Busy Busy

Well ALA does care, and has worked with me on the issue.

I have an interview next week with an academic library. I”m excited and nervous at the same time. I was going to make a flash tutorial for their catalog, but found that one of the librarians has already made one :D I hope I don’t appear a suck up if I use it instead of making my own.

I’m also working on more classes for Second Life. It seems like if I write two a day I will get an endless supply of visitors to the island, but I don’t have that much energy :D . I am happy that dozens of people are coming to my area now getting the freebies and taking classes.

Writing wise I still haven’t done much. My first article should come out this month. I’m impatient for the journal to arrive. I know that the article is horrible, but its my first one. When I submitted it I though I did a good job. I wonder if the editor did anything to it?

Second Life Library was able to talk to Information Today about pubishing a book on our experiances. I urge you to put this on your must buy list when it comes out (I have no clue when that would be though).

Well ttyl

Risk Takers and Rule Makers

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

In addition to the presentation I’m giving today about Millennials, I wanted to point people to further resources. When I have more time I can fully develop my pathfinders, but in the mean time, you can check out the following.

Anime & Manga: No Flying No Tights, Librarians Guide to Anime and Manga, and AnimeNfo

Comics: My Pathfinder

Art: DeviantArt

Gaming: Libgaming, Video Game Collection Policy, Ann Arbor, Bloomington Public Library

Social Networking: YALSA Social Networking Toolkit, Library Loft, My Own Cafe
Movies: Youtube highlights, The Movies, Flash Animations,
I hope these resources inspire you. Please feel free to leave comments about what you are doing at your library.

My goal is to encourage you to take one interest, whether it’s a personal hobby or something you don’t know much about and want to learn more. Take one area and focus on it. Participate in the online communities related to it, and then you will better understand Millennials. You may even develop a new program or collection which you can write an article about or develop a presentation. In any case, you have the chance to affect the future. We must be Risk Takers and at the same time rule or boundary makers for the teens and young adults who use our libraries.
